Wicca Online Community For Pagans and Wiccans

I'm new to this site as well as The Craft, and I'm still exploring. I'm thinking of exploring Runes, but have never used them before. Do I need to cast a circle when I use them, and do I do anything to them before I use them? Your insight is much appreciated!

A book that I'd highly recommend to you if you're interested in working closely with the runes is "Taking Up the Runes" by Diana Paxson. It's a great overview of the entire rune system and will help you a lot.

It isn't necessary to cast a circle to use the runes; although if the circle makes you feel more comfortable when working with the runes there's no reason not to cast a circle either. If you are working with a new set of runes that you bought I would start by cleansing them to rid them of any extraneous energy that isn't your own. Then keep them with you for about a week, under your pillow at night, and carried on your person during the day to get them in tune with you. Some who work in the Norse system like to bind the runes to themselves with a drop of their own blood, but that's up to you.

there's a couple of good on-line sites on the runes at:

I have felt the same way--the Craft has always been my path to pursue and I am finally beginning my journey as well. Sometimes I feel very lost and that I have no direction--it would be nice to have a mentor in those circumstances. How has your journey been thus far?

Thank you for the helpful info, Lark! I think that I have an understanding that it is a slow process and takes a lot of patience which I am learning to accept(although sometimes difficult), hopefully I will get the hang of them in the near future. :)

Blessings~
