Wicca Online Community For Pagans and Wiccans

So I am just going to jump right into this post and make it short and sweet.  My parents passed away over 2 years ago.   I've dealt with it but now that I have chosen wicca as my path I wondering if there is anyway I could contact them.  I've only just started my path but I've read about summerland, the veil, and reincarnation and different sorts of bits about death in wicca.  I am wondering is there some sort of divination I can use to contact them (like a ouji board).  Do people really believe that is possible?  I am just wondering if anyone thinks this is possible or a good idea or a bad idea or any thoughts in general. Thanks!

I'm sorry about your loss.
I don't know what trad Wicca has to say on the subject of speaking to the deceased, so I won't even try to answer from a Wiccan perspective. I will say take anything you read in books with a hefty grain of salt.
From my own perspective, I would say don't attempt it. If the dead have information that they want to pass on to the living, they always find a way. I can't tell if you have a reason to want to communicate with them, it kind of just sounds like you want to try it for the sake of trying it. That's not wise. Leave them to their rest, and if they have something to say, they'll say it.
Thank you for commenting. I don't have any important reason for contacting them. So yeah I guess I will just let them rest and if they got something to say they will drop me a sign :)

As far as Wicca goes I think the broad view is that you over to the Summerland, until your ready to join the dance of life again. effectively reincarnation, I can appreciate the desire to communicate to close ones who have passed over but would seriously err on the side of caution, mediumship and those who claim to communicate with spirits is something I have always been highly sceptical of, and there are no end of bogus mediums who will happily take your money and break your heart.

Although I'm not saying there aren't genuine mediums, and communication between living and passed over spirits isn't possible, the tricks of fraudulent mediums are well known, if you where planning on making contact yourself, just be careful that your desire doesn't override your reason, I would suggest the same as sundog, in as much as I wouldn't attempt it.

There are those that have used Ouija boards and claimed successful contact with spirits, and there are both positive an negative accounts of their experiences, as I believe in reincarnation also I would say that the spirit pat of the person takes on new form and continues to exist and live in another life.

I would say don't try it. You do not know what you are getting yourself into or what you will bring with you when you do that. It's not smart.

Ancestor cults are amongst the oldest forms of religious practice, spread across many cultures. You could build a relationship with your ancestors; set up a shrine offer to them, talk to them and invite them into your life and your practice. They will send you an omen or you could ask them simple questions, some practitioners use three coins to elicit a yes/no response to these enquires. It takes time to form a relationship and be confident with an ancestor cult but well worth the time and effort. Ouija boards are unnecessary, bit of a 19th century gimmick, in my opinion.

Though, if you truely believe in reincarnation that would exclude an ancestor cult.

Hi Scott

Talking to the dead is a very ephemeral thing;   in that it will either work or it won't.  And, you can do everything the same one time and it will work, and maybe a hundred other times it won't.   This is not scientific.  It's ephemeral.  But with that, I will tell you what works (usually) with me.

Like building a bridge, you can only build it to the middle of the river -- the other half is up to the person that passed.

Simple invocation;  it will either work or it won't.  No guarantees, but I'm just trying to help.

1.  Green Candle;   Used for invocation (love, actually).  Get one that's High quality, large.

2.   Picture of one of your parents.  Not both.  One at a time.  Sorry, I have not been able to invoke > 1.

3.  Light the candle in the evening before a full moon.  Make sure it is lit for at least 24 hours.  Keep a picture of one of the parents next to the candle.  You don't have to be present - in fact, I have found it better if you are not around... But keep it near the vicinity of your Sacred Circle site.  Just go to work or go about your day, but during this time, attend to step 4 below;

4.  Write a poem to the loving memory of your parent.  It should be made withing the 24 hour period.   Sorry... we can't give you some "canned" words on this -- this is between you and the spirit of the parent you are invoking.

Example;  My parents were not "nice" ... I wrote a poem about questions I had about my relationship and how I viewed how THEY perceived their  relationship with me.... you will have to find a very compelling question to them and put this into verse.  Why verse?  Which Verse?  Why:   Because verse (blank, iambic, etc. is what catches the attention of the spirits because it takes effort from us, the living... Words matter).

5.  Night of the full moon (tomorrow);  Move the candle and the picture into the Sacred circle, and call upon the spirit of the loved one.  Recite the poem.  Close your eyes, converse, and try to sense if the spirit is there or not. You will know.

Some technical things;

1.  Green candles are usually used for invocations of love.  Black for banishing.  Forget the "green candles are for money spells" thing... Money spells are not valid, in my experience... "Money" is a function of intelligence, effort, imagination, All different invocations...

2.  Spirit invocation usually takes a full day.

You have confused ancestor cults with neo-Wicca (DRG) ceremonial magic, Ancestor cults were and are far from ephemeral (Ephemeral =lasting a very short time), ancestor cults date from the neolithic period and continue to exist in many cultures today.

Why do you think you need a full moon to talk to your ancestors, is that your UPG, a specific tradition or internet 'wisdom'?

Green candles? Ancestor veneration is ancient it predates neo-Wicca colour correspondences, and coloured candles for that matter. You missed the point ancestor cults are about creating relationships, they not one off neo-Wicca invocations. Though, offering poem to your ancestors is a good example of a votive offering to ones ancestors.

There are many excellent websites that discuss forming a relationship with your ancestors and setting up shrines, steer clear of the fluffier versions.

Hi Hildebruth

I can't think of another word other than ephemeral... It either will work or it won't.
It might not even last through the tire ceremony.

Also, I'm only relaying what worked with me. But to your post, green was my Fathers favorite color, so it might be entirely unrelated.

Thanks for the reply.

Just want to say thanks to everyone that replied.  I've read all the comments and decided that i will just have a short ritual to honor my passing parents instead of trying to contact them.  Thanks for all the help!

Blessed be!

I guess I will pop my two cents into this. However opinionated or wrong it might be.

I'm a natural born empath, and spirits, I feel like, are drawn to me like a fly to a bright blue light. I'm by no means a medium (I don't think, still finding my other gifts), however again, they've never been shy to come poke me and be very annoying about it. I can say I've never tried to call a specific spirit. The exception to this is this past Samhain, although I feel like I got really lucky in that. I had a large fire outside, my high priest did a Samhain ritual...and I just thought of a loved one that has passed and BAM - they appear.

From a wiccan view point, to my understanding, directing or using magick with life forces is considered "higher magick", meaning the individual has to be properly prepared to perform. Also to my understanding, it's 2nd year in a ranking system of dedicate, 1st, 2nd, 3rd (training for high priestess/priest).

Spirit boards do work, however I wouldn't use one alone...ever. Just sayin'. I've had success when using them. They're like a box of chocolates, never know what you'll get.

I'd also like to comment on the post Ashfox made about what works for him.

  1. First off, I'd like to note that there is a huge difference between invocation, incantation, and evocation. Are you sure you used the right one? I'll leave my personal opinion out of it as it's irrelevant, just saying this as food for thought. A huge pet peeve of mine is when people of the craft use these wrong.
  2. What in blah are you talking about a green candle? For the dead, I'd use purple or white. Green has never represented love to my knowledge...money, earth, pentacles symbol, etc yes...not love. Just what? Green is my favorite color, still I'm confused here. Money spells have worked just fine for me when I used them. I'm also not greedy, but that's a topic for another day. Color correspondences matter. Very wrong of you to inform someone it doesn't. Shame.
  3. A picture will work, or anything else that belonged to them or had ties to them - I agree here.
  4. Poem is great, makes it personal and puts more of your personal energy into it.
  5. I see you chose full moon over the new/dark moon. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'd like to know why that over the other. (Really, not saying you're wrong it can be done at either.)

Either way, Scott, it's complicated. Do you by chance know anyone who is well established on their path and have done this a time or two?

No, I don't think green is unrelated to your father, as a pagan who honours my ancestors I would say that burning a green candle is your father's influence rather than that of the website you referenced. They send us omens and preferences which offer us a way to honouring them, as did our pagan ancestors.

Our ancestors are most likely to have the best interests of their kin as their foremost, the contacts you have with your ancestors feel ephemeral to you because in your practice your relationship to ancestral kin is not a ritual priority, which is a shame. Remember the DRW ritual cycle is based on Celtic and Germanic lore, the tribes that formed these linguistic groups ritually honoured their ancestors.

Ephemeral does not mean it will work or it will not, it means lasting a short time. Kinship is eternal not ephemeral.
