help! I need a curse lifted.

My family has been cursed, I believe with one that makes us stay in the same Place in life. Whenever we get the chance to better ourselves, through hard work or love something horrible happens. (not death) I think I have traced it to the beginning but I not 100% sure. if it goes back any further it will take it back to the 1900s.
