Wicca Online Community For Pagans and Wiccans

I created Wiccantogether.com to help answer questions I have.

What does it mean to be Wiccan?

Is it a religion? How do I get started?

Please feel free to message me or leave a comment.

Any Info will be greatly appreciated.

Wow Brian, thankyou for creating something so special...
I was not really able to discuss things or meet people with similar interests on myspace and facebook, and although i have many friends there that i know, they are not ones with similar beliefs.
This site is groundbreaking and i hope to spread the word...as i feel it is perfect! A myspace/facebook for Wiccans. It is also difficult to meet people with similar beliefs sometimes as we do not congregate in churches, nor do we advertise or recruit ppl into covens etc. Some of us even feel we need to hide our beliefs still in fear of being persecuted by Christians, or areas that have strict religious dogmas and stigmas.
To answer your question...technically Wicca is a religion..well it depend on where you live..in the USA its a recognised religion, in Australia it is classified as "Pagan/Jedi or other belief" and only a belief system as such.
It is Kind of sad that we get heaped in with the idiots that claim they are Jedi Knights, but the amount of ppl who claim this in the census has risen so high that it had to be given a recognition as a religion. The amount of them is so highj that we have to share, and the sad thing is that within the Australian armed forces one can have Jedi on their dog tags but not Pagan or Wican! apparently our amounts of ppl who claim it are not enough!
Wiccan covens in the USA can nominate themselves as churches and not pay taxes as long as the have a covenspace that they congregate in once a week or whatever.
You can have Wiccan on army/marines doggy tags, and request last rights from Wiccan clergy if on deaths door, as a legal right in the armed forces if you claim this as your religion.
Theroetically though, "Wicca" means "Witchcraft" and "Wiccan" means "Witch/Wytch"...
However "Wicca" these days is known as those who see it as a religion, usually Alexandrian/Gardnerian or what i call the " Fluffy White Bunny" variety- those who are mainly New-Age influenced and claim only "white witchcraft/magick". Therefore "Wiccan" is often used to describe those who see it as a religion as opposed to a belief system of many paths.
One can become a certified Correlian Priest these days and earn the title " Reverend" legally albeit obtainable over the internet after a 6 week course...
In Australia one can be legally married by a Pagan Wedding Celebrant, as long as they are a legal wedding celebrant and Master of Ceremonies, and one can be Handfasted and legally married simultaneously by a High Priest/ess who is a legal wedding celebrant..which is what i chose to do, designing with my Preistess Celebrant a personalised ceremony with a Crowleyan theme. I am told ( by my husband who is African-American) that in the USA one can have a Wiccan wedding but it isnt recognised as only a minister/priest can marry legally and everyone else needs to go to a courthouse or City Hall/ registry office to make it legal....
Technically though, "Wicca" still means witchcraft, and a "Witch" is anyone who practises it.
Yet one does not have to be Wiccan to practice Witchcraft. Witchcraft is the practice of Magick and the belief in a Pagan belief system. However not all Witches are Wiccan, and not all Pagans identify as Wiccans although all Wiccans are Pagan, often the Pagans are linked with those who consider themselves as "Heathens", and can be one and the same, yet Heathens do not classify themselves as Wiccans or Witches.....Complicated isn't it? lol
This is why the Pagan Awareness Network in Australia tries to encourage ALL Wiccans , Pagans , and Heathens to identify in the census polls as " Jedi/Pagan or other" so that we can all be counted as a mass and be classified as a religion legally. Before we had smaller numbers the choices were Catholic,Christian,Judaist,Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist,Atheist, Pagan/Heathen, New Age, or other...please explain here....lol, however ppl started saying, "Wiccan", "Druid", "Satanist", "Witch", "Jedi" as opposed to Pagan/Heathen...so thats where its at legally here...
I usually claim myself to be a Pagan and a Witch, avoiding the politically correct term "Wiccan" as this i feel is trying to "sugarcoat" the term Witch because of the fact that "Wiccan" is more socially acceptible and implies that you are a practicioner of "White Magick" only as opposed to those awful Witches lol.
Witches are badly depicted throughout history, and are still used in childrens books and classrooms to describe the quintessential evil crone hag, that is strictly female, old, wretched, wears a black pointy hat, and has warts on her nose, and society still has a stigma associated with this term obviously.
However, I being a non-conformist do not care if it makes ppl uncomfortable when i do not claim to be a White Witch, often stating that i am an eclectic Witch that practices "Technicolour Magick" lol, white , green, black or whatever my mood feels, however my intent is usually good and my heart is pure!
But when it comes down to it, Theoretically speaking, I AM a Wiccan in the true sense of the word- A Witch!
Blessed Be newfound friend! xx

Merry meet all,

Wicca is indeed a religion. We are a recognized religion with in the US since the 80's. We have just fought and WON the right to have a pentacle placed on our armed service men and womens tomb stones in the vets cemetaries... Though Wicca is only a little over 50 years young, its foundantion dates back to pre Christianity. To be Wiccan at least to me, depends whether you are Trad (Traditional Or Eclectic) Though being a traditional Wiccan, I feel in order to consider yourself Wiccan, you need to follow the Rede which includes yourself. One should go through a dedication for a year and a day, first degree for a year and a day, second degree for at least a year and a day, and then third degree. Working on healing your soul on a continual basis. Being one with mother earth, walking in the gray, BALANCE in all do. For the short version. Hope this clears some things up.
Blessed Be
